Frequently asked questions

General questions about solid surface

What is solid surface

Solid surface is a composite of mineral fillers and polymer binders, used for worktops, washbasins and other interior products. Its composition varies by manufacturer: Kerrock uses an acrylic binder, while Durat is polyester-based. Not every product described as a “stone composite” is solid surface.

How much does a solid surface worktop cost

A price per metre alone is not enough to establish the final project cost. The price depends on the material and colour, dimensions, design complexity and material yield. For a more accurate quotation, provide a drawing, dimensions and the required specification.

Can you put a hot pan on solid surface

Do not place hot pots or pans directly on the surface; use a heat-resistant trivet. Heat resistance does not make a surface immune to damage. Corian recommends running cold water while pouring boiling water into the sink.

Does solid surface scratch

Yes, so use a chopping board. Signs of use are generally more noticeable on dark and glossy surfaces than on light ones. This is an important consideration for a busy kitchen.

How do you clean solid surface and remove stains

For everyday care, use the cleaner and cloth recommended by the specific manufacturer, then wipe the surface dry. Coffee stains and limescale may need different treatments. A non-porous surface is not resistant to every chemical; check products against the care instructions.

Can a damaged worktop be restored

Professional refinishing can remove or reduce many types of solid surface damage. What is possible depends on the depth and location of the damage, the colour and the construction. A specialist should assess deeper scratches or cracks first.

Is a solid surface worktop really seamless

A worktop made from separate pieces has joints, but the right adhesive and fabrication can make them very discreet. Strong veining or directional patterns make a continuous appearance harder to achieve. It is more accurate to describe a visually continuous surface than to promise invisible joints in every case.

Can a washbasin or kitchen sink be integrated into a worktop

Yes. Solid surface allows integrated washbasins and kitchen sinks with a visually continuous transition into the worktop. The solution depends on the material, model and project. Agree on the bowl’s dimensions, depth and intended use before ordering.

What warranty applies to solid surface products

The warranty on the fabrication of the finished product is separate from the material manufacturer’s warranty. Artstone products carry a 2-year warranty; the material manufacturer’s warranty period and terms depend on the product. For example, the HIMACS 15-year limited warranty in Europe has fabrication, installation and use requirements, so it does not automatically apply to every finished product.

How do you choose the right worktop material

Decide what matters most: natural patterning, heat and scratch resistance, a continuous design, maintenance or repair options. Compare like-for-like quotations with the same dimensions, cut-outs, edges, sink solution and installation scope. No single material is best for everyone.
